I'm the master trainer here at lolo and the mad scientist behind most of the fitness routines in our apps. I'm an NASM Certified Personal Trainer, a black belt in Jiu Jitsu, and I have an MBA from the University of Utah. I like to think of myself as the world's toughest MBA and so far no one else has come to claim the title.
Of course, I didn't start out that way. I came from Wisconsin where my midwestern genetics and midwestern diet of brauts and cheese set me up early for the body I definitely did not want. As I grew older I traveled the entire fitness spectrum as I tried to fix that; from trying to bulk up with body building to struggling to lose fat, from working out two hours a day with little results to getting great results in just twenty minutes a day.
I faced the same problems then that brought you here now; I was drowning in a sea of misinformation and conflicting "facts." I wasn't opposed to working hard, but it felt like none of my hard work was yielding any results. In time, a found Jiu Jitsu and my instructors showed my how 2 hours in the gym doing 3 sets of 10 on every machine I could find was doing me no good. I could pull more than my weight on a pulldown machine, but I couldn't do one pull up. When dropping my workouts from 2 hours to 30 minutes and focusing on the right exercises started yielding great results, my eyes were opened to the fact that simply doing it wasn't enough, you have to do it the right way to get what you want.
Exercise is only half the equation, and my eduction on the subject of nutrition kicked into high gear when I joined a fitness start up where I worked side by side with a professor of exercise and sports physiology from the University of Utah. His job at this company was to churn through the mountains of exercise, nutrition, and supplement research out there, and you'd be amazed what you can learn when your co-worker is throwing out interesting findings all day long like:
"Did you know that type 2 diabetes is curable with exercise?"
"Did you know that adding almonds to your diet actual burns fat?"
"Did you know that splitting your workout burns more fat than one long session?"
"Did you know that broccoli contains cancer fighting agents, but only if cooked properly?"
"Did you know you'll gain 5 pounds of water weight back after you finish a diet (and that this is totally fine)?"
This knowledge was vital to me finally reaching my goals after the punishing set backs caused by joining this company in the first place. We all worked 20 hour days getting the company up and running as high-fat comfort food was literally delivered to our desks so we wouldn't have to get up. The average weight gain per employee was about 30 pounds that first year, mine was well over that as I summited Mount Fat Guy and a wildly unhealthy 300 pounds.
Learning how the body actually worked allowed me to drop 70 pounds over the course of the next year. This is something I never would have been able to accomplish before, and going through the process helped me fully understand the emotional struggle, set backs, and joys that accompany dieting. We were meant to live in an environment where food is scarce, and our bodies evolved to eat as much as possible and move as little as possible to ensure our survival. Many trainers don't understand how badly your brain tries to sabotage your own efforts because most of them haven't lived it.

I look at dieting like quitting any addiction. You have to fail over and over before you finally break through and see success. I see my role here as your Fitness Sponsor. I've been through the trials, tribulations, and heartaches and I finally broke through. I learned the tricks that work, I understand the voice in your head that tries to sabotage all your hard work, and I understand why the fads are fads. I've learned where to go for the legitimate research and how to filter out the bias. You wouldn't trust a smoking study by RJ Reynolds and I don't trust a supplement or exercise study with a clear conflict of interest.
I enjoy helping people reach their goals because I've seen just how amazingly it can change someone's life. It's more than just a confidence change from looking better, people genuinely feel better both physically and emotionally. I always like to use the analogy of boiling a frog in a pot. They saying goes that if you put a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will leap out right away to escape the danger. But, if you put a frog in a room temperature pot and then gradually heat it until it starts boiling, the frog won't become aware of the danger until it is too late. So many people's physical and mental health is slowly boiling right now and they don't even know it.
